Taking place on Tuesday 4th November, the event will once again be held in association with UN Tourism and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), moderated by Christian Fraser, Chief Presenter at BBC News. Taking place in the new Maritime Suite, George V Room 1 (part of Excel London’s newest expansion), the summit, now in its 19th year, is expected to showcase its most impactful lineup so far, building on momentum from previous events.

Last year, the summit brought together over 50 Tourism Ministers – a 12% increase on 2023 and record figure to date. A growth which reflects an overall uptake in attendance for WTM London, with 2025 on track to become the largest in the event’s 45-year history.

This year, the summit, ‘Reimagining Tourism Investment Models: Building Next-Generation Incentives’, will explore innovative approaches to tourism investment and forward-looking incentives, aligning with the show’s overarching conference theme of ‘Reimagining Travel in a Changing World’. Building on last year’s discussion, which focused on artificial intelligence, this year’s summit will address key topics such as the integration of emerging technologies to unlock new markets, tools to align investment with national economic transformation agendas and how to diversify tourism investment for long-term resilience.

With tourism entering a decisive stage of transformation, the summit will present clear steps to take tourism investment models from traditional and service-based to strategic and forward-looking.

Elsewhere on Tuesday 4th November, WTM London’s wider conference programme will see the return of the Sustainability and Geo-economics summits, as well as the unveiling of the latest WTM Global Travel Report, with the Technology and DEAI summits to follow the next day. The final day of the event will feature the Marketing summit, ITT Future You Forum and closing keynote session, with a soon to be announced special guest.

The first keynote speaker, Maria Teixidor, will lead the way on the Main Stage with an enlightening fireside address on the first day of the show. The exclusive interview, titled ‘Beyond the Pitch: Maria Teixidor Unveils the Playbook for Leadership, Culture, and Equality at Barcelona FC’, will see Maria share her personal experience as a woman within one of the world’s most renowned men’s football clubs. As a previous member of the Board of Directors of Barcelona FC, and the first woman to hold the position of Board of Directors’ Secretary, she will share thought-provoking insights into the multifaceted world of football leadership, delving into the strategies and values that underpin the creation of a thriving team culture and a devoted fan base.

An icon in women’s football, having also held responsibility for the growth of the female team, Maria will reveal how she successfully navigated the challenges of working in a male-dominated industry, and share actionable steps for achieving gender equality.

This includes Ellie Middleton, an autistic and ADHD speaker, writer and creator. After a lifetime of feeling misunderstood, Ellie was diagnosed with both autism and ADHD at the age of 24. Since then, she has gone on to build an audience of almost 400,000 people online, write her first book with Penguin Life, and work with global brands like Disney, Google, Samsung and LinkedIn to change the narrative on neurodivergence.

Her stimulating session, titled ‘The future of events: neuro inclusion as a channel to cultivating belonging’, will see her join a lively discussion, with representatives from Google and FIRST, about embracing neurodiversity when designing experiences to show how events can truly resonate with all brain types.

The team behind IBTM firmly believe that both Maria and Ellie’s insights are of great benefit to anyone, regardless of background or identity, who is experiencing that challenging or adverse working environments are hindering their professional success.

Recognising that not every attendee accesses content in the same way, this year IBTM World has launched Workplace Revolution, a welcoming space where delegates can hold conversations with inspirational figures in a relaxed, campfire-style setting.

These figures include CEO of equity, diversity and inclusion consultancy SLS 360, Samantha Stimpson B.Ed MA, who will host a practical workshop, titled “Creating diverse cultures: why, how, when …’ Samantha promises to equip delegates with the knowledge, tools, and strategies they will need to create these cultures within their organisations and will demonstrate how such cultures can drive innovation and boost productivity.

Also at Workplace Revolution, will be Richard John, C.O.O at Realise Me Ltd, a specialist events services agency, with his session ‘Diversifying the Workplace: tapping into the potential of those with learning difficulties’. Richard will be joined by representatives from Hilton Birmingham Metropole and The Power of Events, as well as Samantha Stimpson, as they delve into how hiring people with intellectual disability, or those from disenfranchised parts of society, can be a meaningful, powerful and beneficial option for event businesses.

IBTM World has announced the results of its bespoke appointment matching process, achieving the same average number of appointments per Hosted Buyer and exhibitor as in 2019. IBTM World 2021 is taking place from 30 November to 2 December at Fira Barcelona.

Furthermore, latest figures show that over 42% of Hosted Buyers so far confirmed are new to the IBTM portfolio, giving exhibitors more opportunities to do business with completely new contacts, and 95% of them will attend IBTM World for the whole three-day duration.

IBTM World Barcelona has been granted preferred provider status from the Events Industry Council (EIC) for its Knowledge Programme. This allows delegates to gain Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) points for each education session attended.

What excites you the most about your line of work?
Problem solving, undoubtedly, number one. Fortunately, my work experience around the world (in India, USA, Malaysia, and more) with both very small and very large businesses has exposed me to problems as well as the way they are solved. It is always exciting seeing how identifying issues and tackling them is great for the culture of a business.

What is your definition for organizational success?
Organizational success is a balancing act. A company has to consider the wellbeing of all its stakeholders: shareholders, customers, employees and the community. I do not believe success can be sustained for long without such balance.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learnt from working within large organizations such as Chartered Bank, HCL and General Electric?
The importance of clear and frequent communication, and a broadly established process for doing any organizational work.

What’s the best piece of advice anyone’s ever given you?
“Watch your relationships”. In the sharp focus on results, it is easy to step all over relationships, but they are the most valuable.

What will be the main takeaways of your talk delivered during the PCMA ICESAP Annual Conference in Bangkok?
We will focus on change. It’s become a truism now that change is everywhere. What is being ignored is that many things also remain the same. Identifying these variables, enables us to leverage them and tackle the change while enjoying the ride.

Throughout your extensive career, you have seen how large businesses can struggle to maintain growth, manage talent and develop leadership. What are the main causes for these and how can the business of events industry avoid them?
As a business grows larger, to make performance more predictable, strong policies and procedures are established. This is good to start with. But then, these same things become ossified and inflexible, the letter overrides the spirit and they become prisoners of their own making. This is what we call an erosion of ‘entrepreneurism’. The business events industry is very young. It is too early for it to become bureaucratic. It needs to stay entrepreneurial. It should cultivate the nine ‘entrepreneurisms’ from now on.

You have worked with hundreds of businesses and entrepreneurs from India, USA and Malaysia. How does the Asia-Pacific market stand out from the rest of the world?
Asia Pacific is a different market. It is much more relationship driven. Much more cost conscious, and importantly, has a more top-down management style. This is changing, of course. Thanks to the philosophy of management pushed by top business schools, business practices are slowly becoming more global.

Duncan’s session leads the ‘innovation, technology and creativity stream’ of the Knowledge Programme and will kick-off the schedule on Day 2. Titled ‘Think Different the Disney Way’, Duncan will draw on his 25-year career with The Walt Disney Company, and his experience leading a team of creative ideation consultants, to show how leveraging creative thinking can generate far reaching and unexpected business results.

Duncan was part of the team that led the delivery of EuroDisney and Disney cruises and held several roles in the company before being appointed Vice President of Innovation and Creativity.
