Caroline Wozniacki won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open by defeating Simona Halep in the final and returned to the WTA no. 1 singles ranking for the first time since 2012. Halep then went on to win her first major at the French Open on her fourth appearance at a Grand Slam final, defeating Sloane Stephens in three sets. Angelique Kerber won her third Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon, defeating Serena Williams in the final and becoming the first German since Steffi Graf in 1996 to lift the trophy. Naomi Osaka won her first Grand Slam title, defeating Serena Williams in the final. At the age of 20, Osaka became the first Japanese woman to win a Grand Slam singles title and the youngest US Open champion since Maria Sharapova in 2006.

The 2018 WTA Tour calendar comprises the Grand Slam tournaments, supervised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF); the WTA Premier tournaments (Premier Mandatory, Premier 5, and regular Premier); the WTA International tournaments; the Fed Cup (organized by the ITF) and the year-end championships (the WTA Tour Championships and the WTA Elite Trophy). Also included in the 2018 calendar is the Hopman Cup, which is organized by the ITF and does not distribute ranking points.

Apia Sydney International 2018

The Sydney International is currently noted as an ATP 250 points tennis event on the men’s tour and a WTA Premier event on the women’s tour. The tournament is held annually in January immediately prior to the Australian Open as a lead up tournament and as part of the Australian Open Series.

Hopman Cup Tournament

The tournament is held from Saturday 30 December 2017. Director Paul Kilderry is looking forward to welcome arriving players. ‘The Mastercard Hopman Cup will feature one of its strongest fields in history’, Kilderry said, ‘We have Roger Federer, world No.2 and 19-time Grand Slam champion and one of the greatest tennis players of all time, returning to Perth.
Angelique Kerber will play in Perth for the very first time. We know the former world No.1 loves Australia and has had so much success here. To have Alexander Zverev, the young superstar back in Perth, is a fantastic addition to our field.
He has had an outstanding year on the court and no doubt he and Angelique will be a big threat to win Germany’s first Hopman Cup in 23 years.’ ‘Australia will be represented by Thanasi Kokkinakis and Daria Gavrilova and we’re sure the public will be right behind these two.

Sydney to Hobart race 2017

The 73rd running of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race begins on Boxing Day 26 December at 1300hrs AEDT and will be broadcast live on the Seven Network throughout Australia. This time around the Polish crew will take part in the race. It will led by Przemysław Tarnacki with 26 persons crew of ocean-going sailing enthusiasts from Poland. The team is training intensively in the waters of the Sydney Harbour before the Tuesday start.

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2015

The race between Sydney and Harbour has distance of 630 nautical miles (1,170 km). The race is run in co-operation with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, and is widely considered to be one of the most difficult yacht races in the world.

The AFC Asian Cup, an international football tournament organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) was held in Australia from 9 to 31 January 2015. It was won by Australia after defeating South Korea 2–1 in extra time in the final, thereby earning the right to participate in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, which is to be hosted by Russia.

As host, Australia automatically qualified for the final tournament, while the remaining 15 finalists (with the exception of Japan and South Korea who qualified via their top three position in the previous Asian Cup) were decided through a qualification process, featuring 44 teams, from February 2013 to March 2014.
The final tournament was played in two stages: the group stage and the knockout stage. In the group stage each team played three games in a group of four, with the winners and runners-up from each group advancing to the knockout stage. In the knockout stage the eight teams competed in single-elimination matches, beginning with the quarter-finals and ending with the final match of the tournament. A third-place match was also played between the two losing teams of the semi-finals (Iraq and United Arab Emirates).
Japan were the defending champions going into the tournament, having won the previous competition in 2011. They recorded their worst finish in the Asian Cup since the 1996 edition in the United Arab Emirates, being knocked out in the quarter-finals by the United Arab Emirates in a penalty shoot-out.

Apia International Sydney is a joint ATP and WTA tennis tournament. It is played annually in January at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre in Homebush. Sydney International was formed in 1885 when colonial officials decided there was a need to discover the best tennis player in each of the colonies and to use the tournament to assist with selection to the Australasia Davis Cup team, however the first time the tournament was played as an annual event was in 1935.
